Find Great Ultrasound Technician Schools in New Mexico
The first thing to look for when researching an ultrasound school in New Mexico is to determine if it is accredited by the CAAHEP. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs is the leading accreditor in the health sciences fields.
Schools that are not accredited will rarely provide enough clinical hours to be eligible for the ARDMS exam. ARDMS stands for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography and is the organization that provides licensing for diagnostic medical sonographers in the United States. It is uncommon that hospitals or large medical groups will hire sonographers that have not passed the ARDMS exam. Even though you can work as an ultrasound technician without an ARDMS license, certain insurance companies will not honor claims for ultrasounds done by unlicensed techs.
Without achieving enough hours of practical experience while attending school, you will need to obtain hours by finding work with doctors or clinics that don’t require a license. Unfortunately, these positions are going to be pretty difficult to find, and will likely not pay a standard sonographer wage. You will generally be working part time and getting far less than your time is worth. Unless you are working more than twenty hours per week, which is not likely in this situation, it will take you over a year to get to the 1,000 hours needed to take the ARDMS exam.
