Find Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Schools in Virginia

When you’re searching for a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer School in Virginia, it is important to find one that is accredited by the CAAHEP. The largest accreditor in the Allied Health fields is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

The main concern with unaccredited schools is that hardly any of them will offer you enough hands on experience to be eligible to take the ARDMS exam. ARDMS is the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and they are the primary licensing organization for all diagnostic medical sonographers. Without having passed the ARDMS exam, very few, if any hospitals will hire you. Many insurance companies will not pay on claims if it is determined that an ultrasound was taken by a technician that was not licensed by the ARDMS, and ultimately, holding the license demonstrates that you have exceeded a minimum level of education and experience as a sonographer.

Other than earning your hands on training hours through school, you will need to get them through work experience at private clinics or doctors’ offices that do not require a license. Unfortunately, these positions can be very tough to find, and will likely not pay a regular sonographer salary. You will more than likely be working part time and making far less than your time is worth. Unless you are getting more than 20 hours per week, which is not likely in this circumstance, it will take you over a year to get to the 1,000 hours required to take the ARDMS exam.
