Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Salary in Kentucky

According to the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics the 2012 average annual salary for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Kentucky was $56,420. An income like this in Kentucky will provide a rather comfortable lifestyle for you and your family, and it all starts with finding a great Ultrasound Technician School in Kentucky. With an ever-increasing and aging population in Kentucky, there has never been a better time to look for a career in health care as an ultrasound technician.

Find Great Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Schools in Kentucky

The first thing to look for when researching an ultrasound training program in Kentucky is to determine if it is accredited by the CAAHEP. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs is the biggest accreditor in the Allied Health fields.

It is really important to select an accredited program because typically they will provide you with both the classroom and clinical training needed to allow you to take the ARDMS exam. ARDMS stands for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography and is the organization that provides licensing for ultrasound technicians in the United States. It is uncommon that hospitals or large medical groups will hire sonographers that have not passed the ARDMS exam. It has been reported that a number of insurance companies will refuse to pay claims for sonograms taken by unlicensed technicians.

Outside of completing your hands on training hours through school, you will need to get them through work experience at private clinics or doctors’ offices that do not require a license. Unfortunately, these jobs can be fairly hard to find, and are not going to pay a standard sonographer salary. You will most likely be working part time and making far less than your time and training is worth. Unless you are working more than twenty hours per week, which is doubtful in this circumstance, it will take you over a year to achieve the 1,000 hours needed to take the ARDMS exam.
